Prolific Japanese auteur Hirokazu Koreeda’s sensitive melodrama follows divorced father Ryota (Hiroshio Abe) as he dwells on past glory and wastes the money he makes as a private detective on gambling. After the death of his father, his aging mother and ex-wife seem to be moving on with their lives while Ryota struggles to take back control of his existence and find a lasting place in the life of his young son – until a stormy night offers them
