St Omer at Glasgow Film Theatre
3 – 9 February, 2023
Acclaimed French documentarian Alice Diop makes her narrative debut with this finely observed drama following Rama (Kajiye Kagame), a young novelist observing the trial of Laurence (Guslagie Malanda), a woman accused of infanticide. Rama intends to write a modern day retelling of the Greek Medea myth about the case, but her plans are complicated when she begins to feel personal connections to Laurence, sparking anxiety about her own life and pregnancy.
Loosely inspired by a real court case, Saint Omer is France’s entry for the International Feature category at the 2023 Academy Awards, and the winner of the 2022 Venice Film Festival Silver Lion.
