On the Prowl

Crimson light is glowing in your window pane
Embers rising slowly through the midnight rain
You're all tucked up and cozy and I try in vain
To shake off the coldest darkness and I'm going insane.

Falling stars are streaking 'cross a curdled sky
Thought I saw the glint of one within your eye
Your door looks slightly open so I make a try
But it's bolted on the inside so I walk on by.

I trudge on through the landscape where my memory's kept
To the edge of the precipice where the lemmings leaped
But I can't even go through with it, I'm so inept
So I wade back through the puddles of the tears I wept.

There's a howling wild hyena hiding near the path
And as I pass by near it I can hear it laugh
So I lash out instantly and drown it in a bloodbath
It whimpers as it pays the price for my unleashed wrath.

My head is oozing hunger like a pot that's cracked
Bones aching like they're bent and stretched upon the rack
So I sidle up so slowly and rejoin the pack
And settle in to howling at the moon and back.
