Mike Leigh’s latest, a historical biopic exploring the last quarter century in the life of the legendary painter J.M.W Turner, is an exquisitely detailed return to period filmmaking. Long-time Leigh collaborator Timothy Spall depicts Turner, delving into the somewhat anarchic life of the artistic genius, never shying away from the lurid detail of a man who was simultaneously celebrated and reviled by both public and royalty.
