Glasgow Youth Film Festival 10^th Anniversary Edition Programme Announced: Skate Kitchen + Q&A, Never Goin’ Back, Late Night: Superbad, pop-up screening of School of Rock and more

Glasgow Youth Film Festival (GYFF) returns from 14 – 16 September 2018, celebrating both its 10^th anniversary edition and Scotland’s Year of Young People.The festival presents an outstanding range of international films Programmed by GYFF Young programmers aged 15 -19, who are mentored on a year round basis.

The Year of Young People 2018

2018 is Scotland’s first ever Year of Young People, celebrating young people’s talents, contributions and creating new opportunities across Scotland for them to shine. The Year of Young People 2018 is a programme of events and activities that will give them the opportunity to show the world what they are made of. This year GYFF is proud to be supported by the Year of Young People 2018 event fund, managed by EventScotland, part of VisitScotland’s Events Directorate.

 Friday 14 September, 2018

Scottish-based production Anna and the Apocalypse, the thrilling zombie musical mash-up, will open the festival on Friday 14 September, followed by a Q&A with some of the cast and crew. The Young Programmers have worked closely with Glasgow Film Theatre’s Public Engagement Coordinator, Jodie Wilkinson, to curate a dementia friendly screening: Movie Memories: Jailhouse Rock will take place on Friday 14 September at Seamore Neighbourhood Cinema in Maryhill. The first day of GYFF18 will round off with Late Night: Superbad: a hilarious and heartfelt comedy produced by Judd Apatow and co-written by Seth Rogen, starring Michael Cera, Jonah Hilll and featuring a breakout performance from Emma Stone.

The GYFF Young Programmers have teamed up with the Take One Action team to bring a topical documentary to the festival: award-winning director Claire Simon’s Young Solitude will screen on Saturday 15 September. GYFF take over GFT’s weekly Saturday morning family screening and present Take 2: Mary and the Witch’s Flower, the latest from the director of Studio Ghibli’s When Marnie Was There. Curated by the Young Programmers in association with Scotland Loves Anime, Takura Igarashi’s Bungou Stray Dogs: Dead Apple, a new feature film following on from the TV series, also screens. On Saturday evening, GYFF18 presents the Scottish premiere of Sundance London hit, Never Goin’ Back, the sizzling debut from director Augustine Frizzell, anchored by excellent performances from newcomers Maia Mitchell and Camila Morrone as BFF high school drop outs, hustling their way to the beach. On Saturday night, GYFF18 is delighted to present the Scottish premiere of Crystal Moselle’s second feature Skate Kitchen, followed by a Q&A with director Moselle and some of the cast. The Wolfpack director’s latest film is a fresh take on adolescent life in New York City, starring real life all-girl skate crew The Skate Kitchen, alongside Jaden Smith and a team of other skaters. Already garnering critical acclaim at international film festivals, Skate Kitchen has been hailed as “an irresistible hangout movie, offering a thoroughly millennial, vérité spin on ’80s skater classics like “Thrashin’.” (Variety).

 Rounding off the 10^th anniversary edition of GYFF, on Sunday 16 September join us for an afternoon of arts and craft adventure at Family Gala: The Mask of Zorro at Blythswood Hall. At GFT: screening as part of the BFI Film: A Language Without Borders programme, the inspiring drama Fighter, and Shorts: Journey to Stardom, a series of short films from across the globe created by young people, selected by the GYFF Young Programmers. The Scottish premiere of fascinating documentary Worlds of Ursula K. Le Guin, exploring the life and work of major feminist author Ursula K. Le Guin through footage and interviews with world-renowned writers such as Neil Gaiman, Margaret Atwood and David Mitchell, will also take place on Sunday 16 September. To close the 10^th GYFF, pledge allegiance to the band of Mr. Schneebly at our pop-up screening of Richard Linklater’s classic School of Rock at Blythswood Hall, preceded by a battle of the bands competition!
