Wednesday 13 November, 2024, 5.40 p.m.

‘Disruption’ is a curated selection of short fictional films crafted by Iranian women, predominantly based within Iran. Set against the backdrop of Iran’s deeply patriarchal society, these films serve as a much-needed disruption. At the heart of this programme, two interwoven themes emerge: the experiences of women and children.

From the delicate and fragmented recollections of childhood memories to depictions of women within diverse power dynamics, this collection beckons viewers to engage with emotions often overlooked in the tapestry of everyday life. Through the lenses of these filmmakers, the inner workings of a system that fosters vulnerability in the lives of children and women are laid bare.

This programme is curated by Pegah Pasalar, Sadaf Sadri and Cryptofiction. The screening has been organized by Zahra Khosroshahi and funded by University of Glasgow’s Thinking Culture.

The screening will commence with a short introduction by Dr Zahra Khosroshahi, lecturer in Film & Television Studies at the University of Glasgow, and end with a Q&A in discussion with filmmakers Nafiseh Zare and Sadaf Sadri.

Q&A Guests

Born in 1991 in Tehran, Nafiseh Zare graduated from the Art University of Tehran with a major in Acting and Directing. As an actress, she has garnered success with films like “Valderama,” directed by Abbas Amini in 2016 (an official selection of the Berlin Film Festival’s Generation Section), and “Disappearance,” directed by Ali Asgari in 2017 (an official selection of the Venice Film Festival). Following her participation in Asghar Farhadi’s advanced directing workshop, she directed her debut film The Zoo in 2021.

Sadaf Sadri is a new media artist and curator based in Seattle. The focal point of their work revolves around the concept of interruption. Their interest in disruption lies in the void that emerges in the wake of the discontinuation of the established power systems. This void, they believe, offers a space to imagine alternative narratives that might otherwise remain unexplored. To translate their imaginations to a more palpable communicative form, they employ e-textile, Video and AI.
