CinemaARC – Journey to the Isles
Thursday 16 November, 2023 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Advanced Research Centre(ARC), University of Glasgow, 11 Chapel Lane Glasgow G11 6EW
Join an enchanting Journey to the Isles with a screening of Marjory Kennedy-Fraser’s silent films of 1920s Hebridean life, with storytelling and musical accompaniment from acclaimed live performers Marion Kenny and Mairi Campbell. Kennedy-Fraser began collecting Hebridean songs in 1905, fired by a desire to preserve the musical riches of the islands’ people. Two disarming films provide a snapshot of her work, and the culture of the people she devoted her life to studying. After the screening researchers will take part in discussing the legacy and debates surrounding her work.
ARC will be showcasing Graham Eatough’s short film Floating Worlds: Erraid Sound at the ARC throughout the day on Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 November.
This event is part of Being Human Festival, the UK’s national festival of the humanities, taking place 9–18 November 2023. Led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London, with generous support from Research England, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy.
