Christ Del Balso’s Travel Blog: Matanzas & Varadero Cuba

Life can’t be bad when the day begins with a fresh piña colada! Our first stop after an early start this morning was at a lookout on the Bacunayagua bridge; the highest in Cuba. The views were wonderful in every direction and as I said, we started the day off right.

Highlights of the day

chris potter.jpgThese included a workshop where handmade books were created and a visit to the studio of famous sculptors. I purchased a vase by an award winning potter named Manuel and got the story behind the creation. It was interesting driving through the countryside but most fascinating of all was the visit to a photographer’s house and studio to see where she lived with her family.

pool.jpgOur lunch at the old DuPont Mansion now called “Xanadu”, was another excuse to eat and drink. Although the food has sometimes been sketchy everything is washed down with cervejas or various Cuban libations. Our beach experience was at the fabulous Paradidus Resort in Varadero. It was so good we had a small rebellion when it was time to leave — sun, pool, and butler service who could ask for anything more!
