Ball of Fire, GFT
12 – 13 November, 2019
Ball of Fire is often overlooked in favour of Bringing Up Baby or His Girl Friday (both solid gold classics) when it comes to Hawks’ screwball comedies. But it deserves to be seen on the big screen, featuring an Oscar-nominated Barbra Stanwyck taking no prisoners, and a lightning-sharp script written by Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett. A comic spin on the plot of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Hawks’ madcap comedy charts the misadventures of seven professors who provide shelter for glamorous nightclub singer ‘Sugarpuss’ O’Shea, unaware that she’s being hunted by the police for her connections with mob boss lover Joe Lilac. Screening in 35mm.
Ball of Fire is screening as part of our Cinemasters: Howard Hawks season.
