Aly Bain & Phil Cunningham return to the stunning surroundings of Cottiers in Glasgow.

What more can you say about these two stellar musicians, now embarking on their 34th year of working together Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham have established themselves as the epitome of excellence in the world of traditional music. Mike Russell of the Glasgow Herald has described them as “probably the best traditional musicians you are ever likely to hear”.

With their musical magic and quick-witted humour they will pull your emotional strings one moment and have you falling off the seat with laughter the next.

Two of Scotland’s most acclaimed traditional musicians have been delighting audiences across Scotland with their masterful, versatile and amusing performances and leading us in the dance on BBC’s live Hogmanay show for over two decades. Oct 2013 saw the legendary folk duo receive the The Sunday Mail Great Scot Award’s ‘Lifetime Achievement” Award.

In 1988, two members from two of Scotland’s leading bands, “The Boys of The Lough” and “Silly Wizard”, came together to work on a television series.

Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham enjoyed performing together so much that they decided to have a small tour that year. That was beginning of a remarkable working relationship and friendship that has endured and continued to thrive taking them all over the world.
They have become a national institution with their incomparable mastery of fiddle and accordion, bringing excellence in traditional music to venues across the country. Individually they pursue other ventures in performance, television and education. It is when they tour together that they truly shine with over quarter of a century of well-honed skills and hilarious banter delighting audiences everywhere.

Both Phil and Aly have ‘many other strings to their bow

Phil, who is Artistic Director of Scottish Music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, had the wonderful opportunity in 2014 to perform at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony alongside Nicola Benedetti. He also arranged & co-produced Pumeza Matshikiza’s performance of Freedom Come All Ye.
Phil also arranged and co-produced tracks on Nicola Benedetti’s new album ‘Homecoming’. He also works with John Ashton Thomas (Hollywood film Orchestrator and composer) on orchestration and arrangements and in 2014 Phil will also be working on a new BBC series on piping.

Aly, who now holds 5 honorary Doctor of Music degrees, was honoured by BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2013 with a Lifetime Achievement Award and his now world acclaimed “Transatlantic Sessions” will be going network in the USA in 2014. Aly continues to develop that series, while also touring in the autumn each year with Ale Möller & Bruce Molsky.
