No good deed goes unpunished in July Jung’s striking first feature. The charismatic Bae Doona (Cloud Atlas, The Host) stars as Young-nam, the new chief of police in a small seaside town. Battling the ghosts of her past, she takes an interest in the welfare of a shy teenage girl at the mercy of a brutal, boozy stepfather. A sudden death makes Young-nam increasingly protective of the girl and sets her on a collision course with a community riven with guilty secrets and deep-rooted prejudices. An intriguing tale that twists and turns in unexpected ways as it builds to a disturbing climax.
