The Beauty of Edinburgh in Spring

Edinburgh is a colourful city at any time of year of course but in spring and early summer it is at its finest.

Arthur’s Seat, the ancient volcano that rises above the capital’s main shopping streets gleams with a yellow carpet of gorse, the Botanic gardens burst into life after a grey, cold winter and each of the hilltops dotted around the city are alive with birdsong, leaves appearing on trees in a dozen different hues and clear distant views unaffected by the heat haze of mid summer.

As a city growing up then expanding outwards around the weathered stumps of ancient volcanic plugs Edinburgh is unique in the UK. Not only can you stand a vertical 800 feet above city streets, iconic buildings, people and traffic, like a living 3D map below you, but the buildings themselves seem to imitate these mini mountains rising beside them. Not only in sheer verticality ten and 12 levels high but in such a solid combined appearance that they look like mountain cliffs from a distance…… just ones with windows.

Arthur’s Seat, Corstorphine Hill, Blackford Hill and the Braid Hills all make excellent viewpoints above different parts of the city and are well worth exploring.
