Red Skirts on Clydeside #IWD2021
Govanhill Baths Community Trust – 8 March, 2021
The final film in tomorrow’s International Women’s Day Film Festival line-up – and our headliner – is Red Skirts on Clydeside by the Sheffield Film Cooperative.
Red Skirts on Clydeside seeks to unearth the details of women’s political involvement with the legendary Glasgow Rent Strikes of 1915. The film focuses on extraordinary women who were leading the movement at the time, including Helen Crawfurd, Agnes Dollan and Mary Barbour, and sources first-hand accounts from women surviving at the time of filming who recalled the period.
The film is a fascinating deep-dive into a significant era of women’s history that is neglected by archival history. By drawing on personal accounts, it highlights the enduring importance of ensuring women’s voices and stories are heard.
