Obsession: Double Bill Safe/To Die For GFT
Sunday 28 July, 2019 at 1.45 p.m.
This double bill brings together two mid-90s arthouse classics that each centre on very different kinds of obsession, and connect with each other in fascinating ways. In Todd Haynes’ Safe, the main character Carol becomes obsessed with possible (and actual) infection from her surroundings, neighbours and family. Meanwhile in To Die For, Suzanne Stone will let nothing get in the way of her desire to be seen on TV.
This special event offers a chance for cinema lovers to dive into a pair of films rich with contemporary relevance, with opportunities to respond to the films throughout the day. We’ll have introductions to the screenings by critics Iana Murray and Katie Goh, then afterwards the audience is invited to the Project Café (1 min walk from GFT) to discuss the films, with complimentary tea, coffee and cake.
