The Bevvy Sisters with The Jerry Cans at Celtic Connections, St Luke’s, 27 January, 2017
Despite their timeless vocal magic, 2016 marks a decade since Edinburgh harmony combo The Bevvy Sisters first joined forces, and they celebrate tonight in suitably sumptuous style. Back in St Luke’s, the very same venue that hosted their debut, and uniting all six lead singers who’ve graced the line-up, this one-off collaboration sees founding member Heather Macleod, Scottish jazz doyenne Gina Rae and Arizona-born songstress Cera Impala – joined by Kaela Rowan, Lindsey Black and Roberta Pia, backed by instrumental mainstay and Fellow Bevvy David Donnelly, plus special guests James Mackintosh (percussion) and Emma Smith (double bass).
While drawing on the classic harmony girl-group tradition, the Bevvys’ unique repertoire sets them vibrantly apart from the crowd, combining gorgeous new arrangements of vintage US roots and swing/jazz sounds with potent original songwriting. Tonight’s birthday set-list includes both current material and older favourites from previous line-ups, together with newly-written songs and specially-arranged numbers featuring the full nine-piece band.
