Film: Sightlines, The Empire Cafe, 26 July – 1 August

sightingsSightlines

A new short film ‘Sightlines’ about legacy – how we see, and refuse to see, the legacies that we leave.

The film will run from 11am to 9pm each daily from 26 July – 1 August

‘Sightlines’ will be showing at The Empire Café in Glasgow as part of the Commonwealth Games. The film is about legacy – how we see, and refuse to see, the legacies that we leave.

Directed by Genevieve Bicknell, the film is inspired by historical aerial photography of Commonwealth countries gathered throughout the second half of the twentieth century by the Directorate of Overseas Surveys. Set in Kenya, and combining 3D aerial images and personal cinefilm from the 1950s, with live action footage of the present day, the film explores how everyday actions can have profound political consequences.

Sightlines has been produced in partnership with the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) and the Scottish Documentary Institute as part of Culture 2014.

The film will be screened on a continuous loop within a purpose-designed exhibition pavilion at the Briggait in Glasgow’s Merchant City as part of the Empire Café, which is exploring Scotland’s involvement with the North Atlantic slave trade via tea, coffee, sugar and cotton.
