Aye, I'd pay good money just to stand inside the door & take in the smells, wonderful. There are some places in the West End that are good time after time. The first place that immediately springs to mind is Little Italy.

The same woman has just stuck a very good review of Pelican by Joanna Blythman in the Sunday Herald under my nose. I can't find it online.
The online review is at http://www.heraldsco...asgow-1.1063662

You can bet your bottom dollar that Ms Blythman's palate is a million times more sensitive than mine.
I don't think I am particularly difficult to please. I'm also pretty forgiving as I've worked in too many restaurants, pubs and hotels not to understand how easily things can go wrong. If I really don't like someplace I tend to say nothing but don't go back. In the main I am much more put off by unpleasant staff than a burnt crust.
Don't agree with you about only finding consistency in MacDonalds etc, G12bloke. There are some places in the West End that are good time after time. The first place that immediately springs to mind is Little Italy. The Buttery is another place that has been fantastic every time I've been there in the past 40 years - maybe it's the building because Two Fat Ladies is also invariably fantastic.
I said nothing about 'only' finding consistency anywhere.
You mention an old stomping ground of mine, The Buttery, almost back to the days of the Shandon Bells. It's been a terrific place in many incarnations but none of them could remotely be described as 'in the West End'.

I much prefer ladies who launch, it's all to do with slips & chains, it's a guy thing.

I trotted out for a wander through Partick and up Byres Road today. Well I didn't walk all the way. I did have the car. Anyway, picked up some bits n pieces (reduced of course) in Waitrose and was then going to go for a bite to eat. When I got to the check out I found I had no card with me ! Had left it at home ! Had enough cash to pay for my messages but the lovely lunch I had promised myself had to be forsaken. Headed home and had beans on toast with black pepper liberally sprinkled. A son was home so shared and ended up having a laugh with him as he disclosed some "secrets" kept from me when he and his brother were growing up. Nothing too bad but let's just say I was probably blissfully sleeping easy in my bed due to not knowing about their escapades in their early teens.
So, I never got to go out for lunch, I had me eye on Velvet Elvis but I had a good day anyway.
All's well that ends well.
I had a wee wander in Partick yesterday. Well went to have my haircut, enjoyed a right good chinwag with my hairdresser. We hung out together when we were teenagers and his memory is fantastic so always interesting to hear about forgotten exploits.
I walked down Byres Road from Observatory Road to Dumbarton Road then along to Hyndland Street (my favourite West End street). I picked up some goodies in the Polish Deli, had a chat with Willy Slavin, Parish Priest of St Peter's, then had a coffee and a read of the paper in Rio's.
I bought some delicious focaccia in Delizique and then wandered home via Hyndland.
Today I met a friend and we had lunch in OranMor then had a stroll through Dowanhill and into Hyndland, where we tried out 'Epicure', the newish cafe/restaurant. It's spacious and swish with a rather industrial, modern theme. Very efficient service, gorgeous coffee and we shared some delicious pear tart with frangipani. There was a large group of young mums with lovely babies, who have made it their meeting place. Will definitely pop in again.

It's a really lovely restaurant. Les Gals loved their fancy cocktails, the food was delicious and service impeccable.
Ron McKenna gives it eight out of ten. I would agree.

The waitress was very pleasant and efficient and kept on her toes as the restaurant had quite a few folks dropping in for lunch. When I arrived the place was empty and I got a bit of a shock with the blasting music and asked if it was going to be that loud but before she had a chance to respond it was already turned down. So I reckon the staff just like it loud. I actually enjoyed the music, which is full of surprises, switching from straight Bollywood to Jim Morrison, 'Riders on the Storm'.
The decor is very colourful and casual. I hope Jimshaed Sharif, owner and chef, does well with his new enterprise. I'll go back.
My friends Jackie and Alex were coming in as I was leaving so will check out what they thought. They are big time foodies.

SO speaks very highly of Pelican opposite the Art Gallery.
One of today's 5pm offers is "Big Deal Two - £25 instead of £60 for a Surf 'n' Turf spectacular for two people at The Pelican Cafe including two six ounce Aberdeen Angus Orkney Gold steaks, West Coast Scallops and a bottle of house wine; a 58% saving on the standard £60."
£60 is a bit over the top but £25 is a bargain.
