Ian Hamilton Finlay (1925–2006) was one of the most important Scottish artists of the 20th century. Finlay was born in Nassau, Bahamas to Scottish parents. He studied briefly at Glasgow School of Art but originally attracted attention as a poet. His frequent references to classicism are rare in contemporary art.

Susan Hiller, Measure by Measure, Section II, 1993 – 2012, Ashes of paintings in 20 custom burettes, rubber stoppers, lead tags stamped with date, 4 glass jars, Corten steel shelf

This exhibition brings together three influential artists: Susan Hiller, Pavel Büchler and Sonia Boyce. Each has an important place in the development of contemporary art in Britain.

Sonia Boyce charts the experience of growing up as a black woman in a white society, exploring the role of gender, religion, politics and popular culture in the formation of contemporary black life in the UK.

Pavel Buchler, born in Czecheslovakia (“a country that no longer exists”) describes his practice as “making nothing happen”, while bringing a particular East European perspective to contemporary art.

Susan Hiller, who abandoned a career in anthropology to become an artist, reveals the repressed and the unconscious in the everyday: her fascination with mystical, supernatural and paranormal manifestations in our culture forms the basis of several landmark installations such as Psi Girls, From Here to Eternity, and Witness.

This exhibition has grown out of our archival research on the Third Eye Centre and CCA. Focusing in particular on the 1980s, which in terms of the archive is often patchily documented, we decided to invite three artists who had shown at different times in that period to return to the building and to create a new exhibition. They will be showing a variety of older and more recent works, spanning subjects such as automatic writing, the unstable nature of memory, homages to past authors and the recollection of black musicians in UK history.

Lord Kelvin: Revolutionary Scientist

Hunterian Museum

Admission free

Based around the life and work of Lord Kelvin, Glasgows greatest scientist, this permanent exhibition is a mix of original scientific instruments and demonstrations. It brings together a world-famous collection of historical items and merges them with modern technology to show how solving problems in physics 150 years ago led to practical inventions which have transformed our lives today.

New Joan Eardley display

A small selection of paintings and drawings has gone on display in the Hunterian Art Gallery to highlight the achievements of the artist Joan Eardley (1921–1963). Eardley is one of the most important Scottish artists of the 20th century, whose depictions of impoverished post-war Glasgow tenement children captured a vanishing world.

The highlight of the display is The Boy David, a sensitive portrait of David Samson, a young Glasgow boy on loan from a private collection. Related pastels and drawings from The Hunterian collection show her distinctive interpretations of the Townhead area of Glasgow, its local people, and the Samson family.

Hunterian Art Gallery
Admission charge

This major new exhibition features a spectacular array of Scottish gold items from the Bronze Age to the present. Focussing on the occurrence of gold in Scotland and Scottish gold mining, Scottish Gold offers a unique opportunity to learn about the precious metal as part of the natural history of Scotland and its historical uses. Featuring a large selection of the finest Scottish gold specimens and objects made and used in Scotland, the exhibition brings together items from The Hunterian collection and other museums and collections across the UK. For the first time, several of the largest known Scottish gold nuggets will be displayed together and the surviving gold torcs from the large hoard found at Law Farm, Moray, in 1857 will be reunited. Other key objects include a gold chain and badge of Order of the Thistle, Scottish gold coinage and medals, and superb racing cups.

 27th September 2013 – 9th March 2014

LIVING WITH WAR is an exhibition of work from Glasgow Museums’ art collections. It illustrates how artists from places as far ranging as Berlin, Brazil, Glasgow, London, Los Angeles, the Middle East and South Korea respond to the effects and prevalence of war and conflict around the world.

The exhibition includes work in film, installation, painting, printmaking and photography and includes historic 19th and 20th century objects by artists such as Francisco de Goya and Christopher Nevinson as well as major 21st century GoMA acquisitions by artists such as Omer Fast, Jenny Holzer and Walid Raad. Several new acquisitions will be presented here for the first time.

LIVING WITH WAR includes direct anti-war statements as well as satirical commentary and documentary evidence challenging and highlighting miscarriages of justice and human rights abuse. The exhibition offers varied and sometimes impartial commentary on a hugely topical issue: the human, cultural and economic costs of war and conflict.

Scott Macdonald was brought up in the village of Eaglesham on the southside of Glasgow and now lives in milngavie on the north side of Glasgow he is a musician who frequently travels the highlands and islands of Scotland playing music.

“Two years ago I began taking photographs as I travelled around the Highlands and Islands on the west coast of Scotland while playing gigs. I have always had an immense passion for the Highlands and Islands, maybe its because my Grandfather comes from Skye? who knows! but one thing for sure is that I have always been pulled there. I had no intensions of becoming a photographer it just happened, I love these places so much I felt I had to capture these memories. I hope you like the pictures.”

One of the driving forces behind The Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Patricia Cain, has been awarded this year’s £25,000 Threadneedle Prizefor her painting Building the Riverside Museum which features the building under construction.

Patricia’s work was chosen from a shortlist of seven which included three Scottish artists, by selectors Xavier Bray, Assistant Curator at the National Gallery, David Rayson, Professor of Painting at the Royal College of Art and Michael Sandle RA, Fellow of the Royal British Society of Sculptors.

Earlier this year, Patricia, who lives and works in Glasgow, won the Aspect Prize 2009/10. Patricia trained as a lawyer before becoming a full-time artist in 2004, going on to complete her PhD at Glasgow School of Art. Her work is focused largely on the regeneration of Glasgow, and Building the Riverside Museum explores the physical construction of the Glasgow Riverside Museum of Transport, designed by architect Zaha Hadid.

Also from 15 September, The Hunterian will celebrate its holding of works by John and Alexander Runciman, two of the most talented 18th century Scottish artists. The new ‘in focus’ exhibition ‘Hagar and the Angel’ sets their work and influences within the context of other important British artists of the time.
