Yoga for Musicians: The Art of Listening with Outi Smith, Glasgow, 22 July, 2017

The Kali Collective Yoga Studio, Suite 415b, The Pentagon Bldg, 36 Washington Street, Glasgow G3 4AZ
22 July, 2017, 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.
This two hour workshop is aimed at musicians of all levels and styles, whether you’re an instrumentalist or a singer. Prior experience of yoga is not required, only an open mind.
‘The first half of the workshop is a practice on the physical element of yoga, focusing on the problem areas of a musicians body. We will go through the particular asanas (postures) that help to ease tension and bring balance to the body, promoting better body awareness and ease of movement when playing our instruments. The flowing sequence will also allow us to connect movement with the breath, helping us to gain focus and prepare the body and mind for the second half of the workshop. Listening is an important part of being a musician, from listening to music and our fellow musicians to hearing music in our heads and paying attention to our inner self.
In the second half of the workshop we will look into the different levels of hearing and ways of listening through simple meditation exercises. We will learn to actively listen without interrupting ourselves, focusing the mind and quieting the mind chatter. Continued meditation practice will lead to better concentration and clarity, allowing us to live in the present. By becoming better listeners we will also learn to communicate more clearly. By tuning into our inner voice we can open the doors to our creativity.’
