Who owns the Clyde? Live Mapathon

Saturday 21 June, 2025, 2 p.m. – 5 p.m.
The Briggait,, 141 Bridgegate, Glasgow G1 5H
Come along to The Briggait, Glasgow for an experimental afternoon of collective mapping of land ownership along the River Clyde.
This live mapathon is an opportunity to contribute towards The Empire Cafe’s ongoing investigation into fragmented and opaque land ownership.
Throughout the course of the afternoon a small team of volunteers will work together to search for ownership of sites along the Clyde focused primarily between Glasgow Harbour and Glasgow Green in the city limits.
You are invited to purchase a bespoke ‘citizen bond’, designed by Edwin Pickstone of Glasgow School of Art, via their Crowdfunder (£5 each).
This covers the cost of one search (plus VAT and printing) to the Land Register of Scotland during the course of the day. You can also pay in cash on the day or purchase bonds that you can pay forward for others.
The mapathon is a live workshop style event running continuously during the afternoon. However, there will be moments during the session to ‘pause’ and reflect informally on findings at the following times:
Timetable
2pm: Introduction to the project and the mapathon (15-20 mins)
3.15pm: Interim review of findings (10-15 mins)
4.30pm: Closing discussion, review of findings and next steps (20-30 mins)
The Empire Cafe has been exploring why the River Clyde is not the vibrant river Glasgow deserves. Through the course of their investigations, co-founders, writer Louise Welsh and architect Jude Barber, created the podcast ‘Who owns the Clyde?’ with co-producer Halina Rifai.
