Weaving in the real-life construction of the Three Gorges Hydro Project with two stories of change, hope and reconciliation, Zhangke Jia’s film explores how a seismic change in geography impacts the people who once called that place home. The project involved flooding the area surrounding the Yangtze River – including the two millennia-old city of Fengjie. Following a miner who revisits the area to find his family after a sixteen year absence and a nurse who is attempting to reconnect with her estranged husband, this film is a uniquely meditative interpretation of individual humanity and massive social change.
