Steve at GFT
19 – 25 September, 2025
Set in the mid-1990s, Steve is a reimagining of Max Porter’s Sunday Times bestseller Shy. Cillian Murphy stars alongside Emily Watson and Simbi Ajikawo (Little Simz) as a headteacher at a last-chance reform school amidst a world that has forsaken its students. As Steve fights to protect the school’s integrity and impending closure, we witness him grappling with his own mental health. In parallel to Steve’s struggles, we meet Shy (Jay Lycurgo), a troubled teen caught between his past and what lies ahead as he tries to reconcile his inner fragility with his impulse for self-destruction and violence.
Why We Love It: ‘The director and star of Small Things Like These reunite, with equally impressive results. Featuring another absolute masterclass performance by Cillian Murphy, the unassumingly-titled Steve further confirms Tim Mielants as a master of intimate storytelling and keenly-observed characters. The final few minutes of this film are so well constructed to leave us troubled, profoundly moved, inspired and prodded by questions about what we’ve just seen. Highly recommended.’ – Paul Gallagher, Head of Programme
