The second in a three part celebration of the best in new Scottish writing, co-organised by Publishing Scotland and University of Glasgow’s Creative Writing Programme.

Writing the Past in the Present: Angus Peter Campbell (Gaelic translation of Animal Farm), Norman Bissell (Barnhill), and Sarah Armstrong (The Wolves of Leninsky Prospekt), chaired by Colin Herd.

Angus Peter Campbell (Aonghas Pàdraig Caimbeul) is an award-winning poet, novelist, actor and journalist. His poetry collection Aibisidh won the Scottish Poetry Book of the Year in 2011 and his novel Memory and Straw won the Saltire Society Fiction Book of the Year in 2017. He was shortlisted for a Scottish BAFTA Best Actor Award for playing the lead role in the Gaelic film ‘Seachd.’

Norman Bissell is the author of Barnhill: A Novel (2019) about George Orwell’s desperate struggle to finish writing Nineteen Eighty-Four on Jura before his health failed and the poetry collection Slate, Sea and Sky, a Journey from Glasgow to the Isle of Luing (2008), both published by Luath Press. A former principal teacher of history and area officer of the Educational Institute of Scotland, he is the Director of the Scottish Centre for Geopoetics http://www.geopoetics.org.uk and lead editor of its journal Stravaig. Sarah Armstrong is the author of three previous novels, most recently The Wolves of Leninsky Prospekt, the first in the Moscow Wolves series. She teaches under¬graduate and postgraduate creative writing with the Open University. Sarah lives in Colchester with her husband and four children.
