Queer Sundays at GFT: Go Fish

go fish

Sunday 25 August, 2024 – 7.40 p.m.

 GFT 12 Rose Street, Glasgoe G3 6RB

The term ‘New Queer Cinema’ which defined a decade in film history, where a boom in DIY and independent filmmaking made fertile ground for filmmakers to tell stories that centred on queer themes. The July to September screenings of Queer Cinema Sundays at GFT showcase three of the finest films to come out of this movement.

In her acclaimed directorial debut, Rose Troche (Bedrooms and Hallways), along with her co-writer and lead actress, Guinevere Turner, delivers a lively, warm-hearted romantic comedy about the quest for Ms Right. Feisty, beautiful Max (Turner) is an outgoing young woman looking for romance. Tired of hearing her whine about the missing ‘X factor’ in her life, Max’s roommate sets her up with bashful, older but homely Ely (V S Brodie). Needless to say, there’s no sign of fireworks. But just as Max begins to think that she is destined to be alone forever, she discovers that some of life’s best surprises come in plain, brown paper packages.

A major hit at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival, Go Fish is shot in beautiful black and white, and is both a stellar example of low-budget DIY filmmaking and a comedic, feel-good entry in the New Queer Cinema movement of the early 1990s.

Go Fish has been digitally restored by the Academy Film Archive and UCLA Film & Television Archive, in conjunction with Sundance Institute. Funding provided by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Amazon MGM Studios, Frameline, Sundance Institute, and UCLA Film & Television Archive.
