In the same year he starred in Luchino Visconti’s family drama Rocco and His Brothers, Alain Delon took on the role of Highsmith’s most famous character, the eponymous, ice-cold sociopath of The Talented Mr Ripley. Although she felt that certain compromises had been made to reach as wide an audience as possible, Highsmith deemed René Clément’s picture – co-written by regular Claude Chabrol collaborator Paul Gégauff – to be “very beautiful to the eye and interesting for the intellect”.
