The hopes and hang-ups of drifting American teens are evocatively examined by Gia Coppola (granddaughter of Francis) in this atmospheric adaptation of a short story collection by James Franco. Featuring a handful of brilliant performances from rising stars Emma Roberts, Nat Wolff and Jack Kilmer, plus hilarious cameos from the older generation, including Val Kilmer and Franco himself, Palo Alto is reminiscent of Sofia Coppola’s debut The Virgin Suicides, and marks the arrival of another talent in this ever-expanding filmmaking dynasty.
