Woody Allen’s latest film signals the director’s return to lighter-hearted territory, with a sharp script, outstanding acting and a luscious period setting. In 1928, sceptical and tired stage magician Stanley (Colin Firth) finds himself enlisted by an old friend to sojourn to the French Riviera in order to debunk a young woman claiming to be a clairvoyant, who has supposedly taken in a rich American family. However, the young woman, played with an easy effervescent charm by Emma Stone, disarms and softens the curmudgeonly Stanley as personal and professional collide to deliver a comedy of manners that is immediately vintage Allen.
