Followed by a discussion and Q&A with director Johnny Gogan, about the film and Butler’s eventful life.
Described as ‘Ireland’s Orwell’, Hubert Butler (1900-91) smuggled Jewish people into Ireland from pre-war Vienna, then exposed the scale of the genocide of Serbs in war-time Croatia. Silenced in an Ireland that could not entertain criticism of Catholic Church complicity in these events, the truth-teller Butler continued to write and speak out.
