Glasgow and the nineteenth-century Gaelic periodical press

The Centre for Scottish and Gaelic Studies is hosting a public lecture programme at the Mitchell Library to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the Chair of Scottish History and Literature at the University of Glasgow. The next lecture in the series, ‘Glasgow and the nineteenth-century Gaelic periodical press’ by Dr Sheila Kidd is being held at the Mitchell Library on Thursday 16 May.

About the Speaker

Dr Sheila Kidd is currently Senior Lecturer and Head of Celtic and Gaelic at the University of Glasgow. Her research to date has dealt with Gaelic literature from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries with a particular focus on Gaelic prose in periodicals and newspaper columns, on the social and historical dimensions of these texts and on the interface between orality and literacy.

More recently she has turned her attention to Gaels in the East and West Indies. She edited Glasgow: City of the Gaels / Baile Mòr nan Gàidheal (2007) and is currently completing an edition of prose dialogues for publication by the Scottish Gaelic Texts Society.

About the Lecture

The first sustained attempt at producing a Gaelic periodical began in 1829 in Glasgow with the publication of An Teachdaire Gae’lach (The Gaelic Messenger), established and edited by the Rev. Dr Norman MacLeod, also known as ‘Caraid nan Gàidheal’ (Friend of the Gaels). This journal, of which 24 monthly issues appeared, was to be followed by a number of other short-lived periodicals with Glasgow emerging as a nexus for Gaelic periodical publishing. This lecture will consider the significance of these periodicals and the literary-minded Gaels who edited and contributed to them.

Event Details

The lecture will be held at the Mitchell Library on Thursday 16 May 2013, starting at 6pm in the Jeffrey Room. Whilst the event is free, pre-registration is required.
