Funeral Parade of Roses at GFT
Friday, 16 June, 2023
Presented by GFT and Bonjour
Join GFT and Bonjour for a screening of Japanese experimental film Funeral Parade of Roses starring transgender actor Pîtâ followed by a 1960-inspired club night ‘Pansies’ at Bonjour with DJ sets from Claire Biddles and Jamie Crewe. Ticket holders to the screening get free entry – show your ticket stub at the door.
Pîtâ gives an astonishing performance as Eddie, hostess at Bar Genet – where she has ignited a violent love-triangle with reigning drag queen Leda for the attentions of club owner Gonda. Director Toshio Matsumoto bends and distorts time, and freely mixes documentary interviews, Brechtian film-within-a-film asides, Oedipal premonitions of disaster, his own avant-garde shorts, and even on-screen cartoon balloons.
Funeral Parade of Roses is a celebration of youth and subcultures, a condemnation of intolerance, and a one-of-kind cinematic experience. A kaleidoscopic masterpiece, and one of the most subversive, intoxicating films of the 1960s.
The event will begin with a performance with Black drag pioneer and performance artist Purina Alpha, followed by a discussion about the film with host, artist Sgàire Wood, and guests, writer Isaac Harris and artist Jamie Crewe.
The film will be followed by a 1960s-inspired club night with a DJ at Bonjour from 11pm to 3am. Ticket holders to the screening get free entry – show your ticket stub at the door. Please note that, although the film screening at GFT is certified 15, only ages 18+ can enter the club night at Bonjour.
