Assured young auteur Xavier Dolan returns with his sixth feature, an adaptation of Jean-Luc Lagarce’s play: a claustrophobic family drama about an award-winning dramatist who returns to his hometown after more than a decade away. Revealing to his family that he is dying, Louis (Gaspard Ulliel) ignites a pressure cooker of familial melodrama with each member of the household adding to the histrionics in their own way. Dolan filters the drama through Louis’ own woozy outlook and an ensemble cast that includes Marion Cotillard, Vincent Cassell and Léa Seydoux.
It’s Only The End Of The World, GFT, 1 and 2 April, 2017
It’s Only the End of the World is confrontational absurdism: a fascinating, sustained assault.
