CineMasters: Terrence Malick
Not many filmmakers can live up to the description ‘visual poet’, but it’s a phrase that does perfect justice to Malick’s achievements on the cinema screen. Once seen, his films are never forgotten.
The New World 4K
Sunday 25 February, 3.40 p.m.
Terrence Malick’s singular vision of early seventeenth-century reimagines the apocryphal story of the meeting of British explorer John Smith (Colin Farrell) and Powhatan native Pocahontas (Q’Orianka Kilcher), then follows Pocahontas through her marriage to John Rolfe (Christian Bale) and her life in England.
The New World is a film of uncommon power and technical splendour, one that shows Malick at the height of his visual and philosophical powers.

The Tree of Life
Terrence Malick’s magnum opus is a visionary hymn to nature and grace. The impressionistic story of a Texas family in the 1950s, the film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father. Jack finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith.Captioned screening
