Bob Law’s Blog: A Fresh Look at Greenock

Bob Law, Photographer and Walker
Living in Glasgow for many decades Greenock, Gourock and Port Glasgow have always been handy for me to visit by car, bus, train or bike but a recent trip down there opened my eyes even further to an area I thought I already knew well.

Greenock Waterfront
First stop was Greenock’s McLean Museum and Art Gallery, larger and more interesting than I was expecting, just off Kelly Street in the town centre. I already knew about the town’s Esplanade ( ample parking here) and the small but attractive Well Park, the town’s delightful sylvan cemetery with its range of trees. It’s two sets of scenic reservoirs, it’s stunning architecture, Lyle Hill views and its up and down nature, all worth visiting… but up until now I didn’t know you could walk or cycle the full length of the dockland area from Gourock to Port Glasgow.

Greenock from the Loch Thom Road
Walkers or cyclists can also return via the high level track running directly above Bogston/Lilybank for further extensive views across the Firth of Clyde.

Gryfe Valley Way Route
The more energetic walkers or cyclists can also explore Loch Thom and The Gryfe Valley area ( Car park at Cornalees Bridge.)

Other museums and sculptures are found all along the same waterfront. So if you think you know the Inverclyde towns… think again. I certainly did.
