When ABC found themselves lagging behind in ratings, they asked conservative commentator William F Buckley Jr and liberal writer Gore Vidal to take part in a series of debates around the Republican and Democratic Conventions of 1968. Whilst Buckley saw Vidal as a moral degenerate, Vidal saw Buckley’s conservative views as dangerous to democracy, and from the moment the two met onscreen the nation became transfixed by their barbed wordplay. From the director of the Oscar-winning 20 Feet from Stardom, this is a captivating look at a pivotal time in American history, seen through the clashing of two perfectly opposed thinkers.
