German director Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall) returns to World War II, this time digging into a relatively unknown 1939 incident in which German factory worker Georg Elser attempted to single-handedly assassinate Hitler with a homemade bomb. Beginning with Elser’s capture by the Gestapo, the film uses a shifting timeline to draw us into the story of a man who staked his life on one conviction: that Germany could only thrive by avoiding war, and being rid of Hitler.
