Badlands
Saturday 10 and Tuesday 13 February, 2024
In Terrence Malick’s dazzling directorial debut Kit Carruthers (Martin Sheen), a young garbage collector, and his impressionable girlfriend Holly Sargis (Sissy Spacek) leave their South Dakota hometown on the run after killing Holly’s father. On their way towards the Badlands of Montana they leave a trail of dispassionate and seemingly random murders in their wake.
The luminous images, the use of Carl Orff’s music, the dialogue and the voiceover providing excerpts from the teenage girl’s artless diary situate the precise recreation of a moment in American history within a larger, more mythic context. Note a rare sighting of Malick himself.
