Takashi Miike’s notorious masterpiece, which garnered both acclaim and outrage upon its release in 2001, Audition remains one of the most infamous and shocking films of the past 20 years. It is also one of the finest Asian horror films ever made. When lonely widower Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi) holds auditions to find a new wife under the pretence of a reality TV show – his potential bride is not all that she seems. This is a feminist rebuttal of Japanese gender conventions which is as beautiful as it is savage.
