The Children’s Wood has officially taken over management

Campaigners finally take community control of local meadow
Celebrating with Spring Forward 27 March, 2022
After a long battle to protect a West End community greenspace, The Children’s Wood charity has now officially taken over management of the land, ensuring that future generations can keep playing there.
Locals, who transformed the once-derelict former playing fields into a lively, beautiful neighbourhood space, are set to celebrate with a Spring Forward event on 27th March where they’ll be looking to the future of the site and launching a new fund-raising appeal.
Known as the ‘last wild space’ in the West End of Glasgow, the Children’s Wood has become a place to play, garden, walk dogs and relax. It was visited last year by the Queen and the Princess Royal and is regularly used by many school and nursery groups.
G20 Youth Festival
Over the last few years the charity has also set up a hugely successful grassroots project in the north west of the city, the G20 Youth Festival, which works with young people from challenging or deprived backgrounds. During the pandemic, they launched Food From The Wood, which cooked and distributed meals to local and vulnerable neighbours. Some of the young people involved have gone on to apprenticeships and G20 has been praised by the Scottish government for its work with the Violence Reduction Unit.Violence Reduction Unit.
Kilt Walk Fundraiser
Now, to raise money for the group, some of the young people have formed a walking group which is taking part in this year’s Kiltwalk Charity Appeal. They are hoping that people will support them as they practice for an attempt on Ben Nevis later in the year. Please support young people of G20 Festival

Finalisation Asset Transfer
With lots going on, the charity’s trustees have welcomed the finalisation of the asset transfer as a chance to start a new era for the land, knowing that it will be kept free from development.
The Chair of the Children’s Wood Board, Alison Spurway, said:
“This is the conclusion of a long community effort to obtain a lease. The negotiations with Glasgow City Council were protracted and we express our sincere thanks to Mitchells Robertson Solicitors for guiding us through the tortuous process.
“This ensures that property developers will have to look elsewhere for potential sites for residential buildings and avoids decisions by Glasgow City Council regarding the use of the land for 25 years. We hope that people in the community will continue to support our efforts to keep this a safe space and we could do with more volunteers to get involved, especially with experience in security, website development, land maintenance, fund raising, professional advice and strategy.”
