Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT) has unveiled the line-up of films audiences can enjoy on the independent cinema’s big screens over the month of December.

GFT is known for providing Glasgow’s film fans with the first chance to see preview screenings, and for its insightful Q&As. December will see the cinema play host to previews of Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film Licorice Pizza in 35mm, and Julia Ducournau’s provocative Titane, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. The cinema will welcome director Paul Sng (Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliche) for an in-person Q&A following the special screening of his new documentary, Year of the Dog, about the bonds between people experiencing homelessness and their dogs. To mark Human Rights Day, GFT will host a special screening of Bafta Award-winning Limbo in partnership with Safe in Scotland’s Community in Action campaign. The screening will include a recorded introduction from writer/director Ben Sharrock and will be followed by a panel discussion about seeking asylum in Scotland, led by Mahdi Saki, Participation Manager for Safe in Scotland, with Patrick Harvie MSP and more guests to be confirmed.

GFT will also screen some of the year’s biggest new releases ahead of awards season. Audiences will have the opportunity to enjoy three of Netflix’s original films on the big screen weeks before they land online, including Adam McKay’s star-studded Don’t Look Up, Paolo Sorrentino’s The Hand of God and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut The Lost Daughter. Other highlights include Joaquin Phoenix at his best in C’mon C’mon, the stunning Hope from acclaimed director Maria Sødahl, Radu Jude’s incendiary Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn, Valdimar Jóhannsson’s genre-defying debut Lamb, and Benjamin Cleary’s dark sci-fi Swan Song, starring Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris, Glenn Close and Awkwafina.

Christmas Returns to GFT

its a wonderful life movie

Christmas returns to GFT this year with all of the trappings, after last year’s cancellation due to lockdown. The cinema’s eclectic festive programme offers something for every taste. This year’s line-up includes Christmas classics It’s A Wonderful Life, The Bishop’s Wife, White Christmas and The Shop Around the Corner, family favourites Elf, The Muppet Christmas Carol and Home Alone, as well cult hit Die Hard and Greta Gerwig’s modern classic Little Women. Mince pies and mulled wine will be available from the GFT bar to complement the festive experience.

North by Northwest

GFT’s late December programme offers the perfect antidote to the post-Christmas slump. From 27 December, audiences can enjoy Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand’s dazzling performances in Joel Coen’s The Tragedy of Macbeth, Mark Cousins’ The Story of Film: A New Generation, Second World War drama Natural Light, a chance to re-watch sci-fi epic Dune on the big screen, and Mohammad Rasoulof’s brilliant anthology film There is No Evil, which won the Golden Bear at the 2020 Berlinale. For classics fans, Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic thriller North by Northwest and George Cukor’s warm and funny romcom The Philadelphia Story offer a welcome alternative to the festive blockbusters.
