The Centenary of the Revolution: Music from the Time of the Earthquake commemorates the events of 1917 in choral music from the age of revolution and civil war. The programme includes Alexander Kastalsky’s lost masterpiece Requiem for Fallen Brothers, soldiers’ and workers’ songs, folksongs and music for solo piano.
Some background information
‘The Centenary of the Revolution: Music from the Time of the Earthquake’ features composer Alexander Kastalsky’s (1856 – 1926) Requiem for Fallen Brothers. Composed initially as a chronicle reflecting the involvement of many of the Allied forces during the First World War, the work weaves music from the nationalities of the Allies into a unique tribute to lost comrades.
The Russian revolutions of 1917 and subsequent political upheaval overtook Kastalsky and his Requiem. Attitudes towards religion and the First World War itself changed rapidly within the emerging Soviet Union and the manuscript was deposited in the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art where it remained unedited and unperformed for several decades.
During the 1990s Kastalsky’s music was rediscovered and his legacy reappraised. Kastalsky scholar and Russkaya Cappella’s co- Musical Director Svetlana Zvereva prepared an edition of Requiem for Fallen Brothers from Kastalsky’s manuscript with accompaniment for string quintet arranged by Graham Hair. It seems appropriate the choir Dr Zvereva directs should perform the work in the centenary year of the Russian Revolution and withdrawal from the First World War.
Russkaya Cappella was founded in 2009 and specialises in Russian choral music. It is a mixed culturally and linguistically diverse chamber choir and draws its repertoire from Russia’s rich musical heritage, sadly unfamiliar in Scotland. Russkaya Cappella has given public performances in numerous prestigious venues, mainly in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
