‘In Process Masterclass’ with Lesley Glaister
With Scottish Writers Centre,
Club House, CCA, 350 Sauchiehall Street, G2 3JD
Lesley Glaister has published thirteen books by major houses which for most of us, as aspiring writers, is the ultimate dream. Despite this she sometimes loves writing and sometimes loathes it and finds inspiration by writing in bed where she says ‘sometimes dreams are still hanging around.’ An English writer with links to Scotland, she’s married to Scottish Writer, David Greig. Glaister lives in Edinburgh and has spent the last seventeen summers in Orkney. Since working in Scotland, Glaister ‘feels quite natural to be here.’ Glaister while a teacher of creative writing, cannot teach us to be writers, or to have an ear for language, or even a subtle understanding of human psychology, or the gift for observation which she calls the ‘talent’ of writers. She can though teach elements of the craft of writing and helps to polish existing talent. She considers herself a ‘coach’ who is there at the side-lines willing and cheering her protégés on. The evening promises to be a diverse exploration into the art of Glaister’s writing practice whose special interest is the study of narrative and perspective, voice and point of view which she considers, the delicate and invisible manipulation of reader response that can mysteriously elevate a work of fiction and provides those exciting light-bulb moments.
Lesley Glaister is a fiction writer, playwright, and teacher of writing. Her first novel was published in1990, and since then she’s published 12 further novels and numerous short stories. She received both a Somerset Maugham and a Betty Trask award for Honour They Father (1990), and the Yorkshire Post Author of the Year Award 1993 for Limestone and Clay (1993). She has several of her dramas broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and her first stage play, Bird Calls, was performed at Sheffield’s Crucible Studio Theatre (2004). Glaister has three grown up sons and lives in Edinburgh (with frequent sojourners to Orkney) with Husband, Andrew Grieg. She teaches creative writing at the university of St. Andrews and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Her most recent novel is, Little Egypt (2014) which she won the Jerwood Foundation’s Fiction Uncovered Prize 2014. According to her website she has recently submitted a new novel to her publisher.
