Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2016 Oscars, Embrace of the Serpent is a visually stunning ethnographic journey. Karamakate, the only surviving member of his tribe, leads two European explorers, one in 1909 and the other in the 1940s, looking for a rare plant with alleged healing powers. Shot in mesmerising monochrome, Ciro Guerra’s captivating film uses breathtaking images to capture both the beauty of life in the Amazon and the devastating effects of colonialism on its indigenous population.
