Royal Conservatoire of Scotland ranked sixth best in the world
The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) has been ranked sixth in the world of performing arts education in a new global review by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).
Scotland’s national conservatoire joined some of the world’s most renowned performing arts institutions including Juilliard in New York, Vienna’s prestigious University of Music and the Performing Arts and the renowned Sibelius Academy in Finland in a new ranking published on 22 March, 2016 by the most respected global higher education ranking authority.

RCS is a national and international centre of excellence for the performing arts. It is one of the world’s most multi-disciplinary arts learning and teaching environments. They offer an innovative curriculum with a specialised educational programme across many performing arts disciplines including: music, drama, dance, film and production.

Founded in 1847, RCS now has over 1000 students from 52 countries around the world. Famous alumni include: James McAvoy, John Hannah, Maureen Beattie, Daniela Nardini, Robert Carlyle, David Tennant, Alan Cumming, Phyllis Logan, Alison Brie, Jack Bruce and Krysty Wilson-Cairns.
I very much enjoyed a teaching stint at the Royal Conservatoire, when I was seconded there by Glasgow Caledonian University, to work with students and staff regarding academic studies. There was a wonderful vibrant atmosphere and the students produced many fascinating dissertations – worth a second read.
The world ranking announcement comes as RCS celebrates a five star review for its spectacular production of the iconic musical, Cabaret, and the launch of a new brand identity campaign aimed at attracting students to study at one of the world’s most innovative conservatoires.
The key campaign message, Life is not a rehearsal, speaks to prospective performing arts students who are making the important and life-changing decision on where to apply for higher education study.
Recently the Conservatoire has announced a £2.3million campaign to regarding the creation of a new Creative Campus with a one-to-one teaching complex and flexible rehearsal space.
