Pádraig Ó Baoighill is an award winning Irish writer, journalist, and broadcaster who has more than twenty published books. His latest book, ‘Rabbie Burns: An Nasc le hÉirinn’ (The Link with Ireland). In this Irish language book, Pádraig explores the life, works, songs, politics and more of Scotland’s national poet and in particular his links with Ireland and looks at parts of Burns’ life seldom covered elsewhere. Also explored are the links and influence of Burns on Irish language writers, such as Séamus Ó Grianna, and his links to Gaidhlig.
It is sure to be a rare treat in Glasgow to hear from one of Ireland’s foremost writers in the Irish language.
Conradh na Gaeilge (The Gaelic League) is an organisation that seeks to promote the Irish language and other Irish traditional culture. A branch was first established in Glasgow in 1895 and thus was the first branch to be founded outside of Ireland. At one time 14 branches that once existed throughout the city, and the Patrick Pearse branch is still alive and flourishing today and has been promoting the Irish language and Irish culture in the city and beyond for the past 120 years. It organises many weekly Irish language classes, for adults and children, as well as many other events that also highlight Irish music and dancing. It partners with other Irish community groups to run the yearly Glasgow St Patrick’s Festival as well as running its own Féile na Gaeilge, Irish language festival, each June. A successful series of partnership events with Gaidhlig language group An Lochran, called ‘Gaels le Cheile’ has been running for several years.
