In the late 1960s, change was coming to America, whether the nation was ready for it or not. Focusing on the short and tumultuous existence of the titular organisation, documentarian Stanley Nelson bracingly brings the era to life, painting a portrait of a country united in name only – as cities burned, Vietnam exploded and fault lines became impossible to ignore. Often only referred to as a sidenote in the wider context of US history, the story of the Black Panthers is a formative chapter in the shaping of modern American culture, and here receives the full telling it deserves.
