‘Will we ever see his likes again?’ Archie Macpherson, football commentator
A midfield general, a winner, a fallen idol. Enter the disciplined world of Graeme Souness, as he takes on referees, the authorities, his own players, Perthshire tea-ladies and his inner demons, in a bid to prove himself as a football manger. We watch him transform the Scottish game during his controversial reign at Rangers, before returning to Liverpool, the club he’d led to glory as a player. But hubris, pressure and one moment of madness cause his downfall, and the loathing of the fans who had once adored him.
This bold new play from Alan Bissett charts the rise and fall of one of European football’s most iconic and divisive talents.
