West End Festival Parade 8th June 2014
Parade Day this weekend!
Scotland’s Mardi Gras hits Byres Road once again
The Byres Road parade, dubbed ‘Scotland’s Mardi Gras’, which is organised by and part of the West End Festival (WEF), will take place this weekend, Sunday, 8 June from 12pm-7pm, come rain, hail or shine!
Last year tens of thousands of people turned out on a blazing hot day to see the colourful and musical parade, and it’s expected that the same number will come to the west end of Glasgow for the spectacular event this weekend. Parade day is free for everyone to attend and no tickets or registration is required.
Road closures
Byres Road (north) and Byres Road (south) closed from 8am to 8pm. Vinicombe Street is closed all day and the Ashton Road car park is closed from midnight on 7th to midnight on 8th June.
Buses are diverted from Queen Margaret Drive via Hyndland Road back to Dumbarton Road – access to the Western Infirmary is from Dumbarton Road. Highburgh Road and University Avenue remain open and can be used as alternative routes.
We recommend using the Subway to travel to the west end. The Subway will operate normal working hours on the day, so please be mindful when leaving after 5.30pm.
Residents and businesses have been notified already and signs will go up on Byres Road from Thursday, to minimise disruption.
The parade
With over 500 participants from across Glasgow, this year’s parade theme is ‘Identity’ and community groups and organisations from across Glasgow have been working on their costume designs which they make and wear in the parade procession.
The day holds: street performers along Byres Road, a food and drinks area and art and craft stalls on Ashton Road carpark.
The route
The parade will start at 3pm from the Botanic Gardens and work its way down Byres Road, turn left to head along to Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery before dispersing on the Dumbarton Road steps.
Restaurants and bars have organised their own licenses for dedicated outside areas but drinking is not permitted out-with these areas. Please drink responsibly.
With over 400 events in the festival programme there’s still plenty of time to attend events across the west end, many of them are free. The festival ends on Sunday, 29 June.
