Jim Jarmusch’s 1986 film follows three different men in a shaggy dog tale of American jailhouse blues and cheap whisky. Starring Tom Waits, John Lurie and Roberto Benigni, the film is steadily permeated with pulpy humour, noir images and an ice-cold charm. One of Jarmusch’s breakthrough films, both fuelled by a myriad of cinematic influences and influencing a generation of filmmakers to come.
Specially commissioned programme notes are available for this film.
