St Andrew's Cathedral Glasgow

Photo: st andrew's cathedral glasgow. After being closed since August 2009 for a major refurbishment and revamp St Andrews Cathedral on Clyde Street has reopened (April, 2011) and is looking magnificient. Apart from upgraded flooring, heating, lighting and so on there is also a new sound system. The visual impact of the renovation is amazing and the building is now wonderfully bright, light and beautiful.

The medieval Cathedral also has a new marble altar, baptismal font and a painting of the Martyrdom of St John Ogilvie by Peter Howson, which has won wide acclaim. Further paintings by Howson of St Patrick and St Brigid can be seen in the porch area in recognition of Glasgow's Irish community's contribution to the local Church. Glasgow's Archbishop, Mario Conti, also made a contribution by designing the Cathedral's new altar and ambo.

In the Exhibition Centre at the Archdiocesan Offices, next to the Cathedral, an exhibition of religious works by Peter Howson will be on show until Sunday May 8, 2011 . (196 Clyde Street). A chance to both admire and buy original art by Scotland's most famous living artist.

Launching the exhibition, Archbishop Conti said:

"This exhibition shows the preparatory work which led to the final painting of St John Ogilvie which now hangs in the Cathedral and it offers visitors the opportunity to acquire as well as to admire these studies and sketches which led to the finished work. "Great work is not achieved except by great effort on the part of men and women who are gifted with great talent. Peter Howson has donated his painting to the Cathedral as an expression of his gratitude for a gift with which he was endowed from above. We should not only enjoy, but also be inspired by this exhibition."

Opening hours: Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday 11am -5.00 pm
Tuesday to Friday, 9.00 am - 5.00 pm

The Cloister Garden

The Cloister Garden to the east of the Cathedral is designed to be an oasis of peace and reflection. It aims to provide a 'breathing space' for those frequenting the Cathedral. Designed in Italianate style, the central monument and decoration of the garden has been gifted to the Cathedral by the Scots Italian community in memory of those who died in the Arandora Star tragedy in World War II.

A website has been created to give full details and background to the Cloister Garden and its story: www.italiancloister.org.uk
