Photo: ashton lane day. This is the second year of the Beerfest, organised by ALPA, the association run by the bar and restaurant owners in Ashton Lane, (behind Byres Road, Hillhead Underground). This year Glasgow has become universally recognised as one of the world's top tourist cities ? No.1 in the UK in the current issue of the prestigious Conde Nast Traveller magazine. Ashton Lane has become a major element in the city's tourist appeal.

Here is what some major guide books have to say:

"This cobbled mews is the heart of the West End night life." Frommer's Guide

" You'll find plenty of trendy pubs and bars all the way along Ashton Lane." Itchy Guide

"Ashton Lane is home to a host of cafes and bars which are generally attractive and flavoursome" Time Out

Photo: lane. The Lane will be closed to traffic and unusually patrons will be able to walk up and down the Lane sampling the beers on offer. Expect street entertainment, outdoor stages, mobile bars and food stalls in the Lane. Live bands and DJs in the premises and a range of exotic beers and lagers on the now famous BEER LIST available in each of the bars at identical prices.

The same bottled products all priced identically will be available in all the bars and restaurants in the lane.:

  • ARTOIS BOCK (Belgium) A beer with real history, this was first brewed in 1892 and has been rediscovered for a new generation. Only ever brewed in the town of Leuven, Belgium with Saaz and Tettnang hops and the cherished Artois yeast. Made from an all malt recipe and brewed to 6.2%ABV.
  • ASHTON LANE ALE (Scotland) Like the Lane itself this beer is lively, refreshing and very popular. Brewed for us by Houston Brewery, this is a different ale from last year - it has a deep red hue and is made with pale chocolate malt, roasted barley and a lovely mix of pale ale malt, crystal malt and hops 4.2%ABV.
  • BELLE-VUE KRIEK (Belgium) A traditionally brewed young lambic beer. The addition of macerating fresh Morello cherries and elderberry juice leads to a second fermentation that fully develops the unique fruity dryness. The fresh cherries also give a burgundy hue and a refreshingly fruity taste to the beer. 8.1%ABV.
  • BITBURGER PREMIUM PILS (Germany) Brewed with the very best ingredients, this is a full bodied, yet light lager. In draught form it is Germany's No.1 seller. Brewed according to the Germany Purity Law it has a dry-finished, hoppy taste. 4.8%ABV
  • BITBURGER DRIVE LOW ALCOHOL (Germany) Speaks for itself! 0.5%ABV BITTER AND TWISTED (Scotland) A blond coloured beer brewed by Harviestoun Brewery. Superb hop profile and contains the aromatic Hallertau Hersbrucker with the spicy Challenger, and finished with the late addition of the citric Styrian Golding hop variety. 4.2%
  • ABV BRAHMA (Brasil) A truly authentic Brazilian beer new to the UK. Is as infectious as the samba with originality and style aplenty. 4.8%ABV.
  • BUDVAR DARK (Czech Republic) Acclaimed new dark lager from Budvar. A modern interpretation of the original lagers of Bavaria and Bohemia, which were all dark. Roger Protz, the UK?s premier beer writer describes it as ?a triumph?. 5%ABV
  • DEUCHARS IPA (Scotland) A brilliant blend of malt (Golden Promise) and hop (Fuggles, Styrian Golding, Williamette) character. Solid gold colour. Remarkably aromatic, smooth body, dry palate with hints of fresh citrus. 4.4%ABV
  • FOSTERS TWIST (Australia) New easy drinking bottled lager, brewed with citrus hops for a subtle taste of lime. Sold in a twisted-cut glass, served ice cold. 4.9%ABV
  • KRONENBOURG BLANC (France) Blanc is the refreshing, fruity, white beer imported from France. Served cloudy in a continental style, its underlying tones of coriander and cloves with a balance of subtle citrus and soft fruit fl avours are intriguingly distinctive. 5%ABV
  • KRUSOVICE IMPERIAL (Czech Rep.) Superior quality Czech malt, natural spring water from the Krusovice Woods and hops from the area are used in the production of this beer. It has a slight gold colour, a deliciously bitter taste and an excellent foam. 5%ABV KRUSOVICE ROYAL DARK (Czech Rep.) Dark beer is the traditional product of the Royal Brewery of Krusovice and for more than 100 years production has not stopped. The beer has a full, sweet caramel taste and a light hop fl avour. 3.8%ABV
  • MODELO ESPECIAL (Mexico) A label mate of the ever popular Corona this is a premium quality, smooth, light lager in a neat bottle. 4.4%ABV
  • NEGRA MODELO (Mexico) Brewed from 1926, this is the older brother of the above. An interesting, darker beer. Creamy, smooth and full of fl avour. 5.3%ABV
  • PACIFICO CLARA (Mexico) Brilliant pale gold colour, slightly hoppy and full of fl avour. 4.5%ABV
  • SCHNEIDER WEISSE ORIGINAL (Germany) Founded in 1872 by Court brewmaster Georg Schneider this is the most typically Bavarian of beers. A classical top-fermented unfi ltered wheat beer, brewed to Georg?s original recipe. 5.4%ABV
  • BULMERS ORIGINAL CIDER (England) How did that get here? Suck the cider through your teeth to feel the sensations of the tannins on your gums and cheeks. Should be well balanced, with a clean, fruity nose, and expect a fresh, appley taste with no unpleasant after fl avours. 4.5%ABV
